Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa was designed with sustainability in mind, and delivering the best of service while reflecting the natural beauty of the coast of Zanzibar.

With over 4 hectares of lush garden, the 11 villas are nestled among trees and bushes for complete intimacy, their architecture emphasizing the local environment through the use of organic materials, shapes and textures. Throughout construction and design phases sustainable building practices have been used by sharing of skills, knowledge as well as processes put in place to ensure the hotel has a positive environmental impact.

Behind the scenes, our operations reiterate our commitment to sustainability through powerful infrastructures and initiatives. We integrated a number of environmental measures and adopted the best sustainable practices & green initiatives to ensure Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is an eco-minded luxury hotel.

Wind and Solar Energy

Solar energy produced from photovoltaic solar panels on our technical buildings and villas cover a considerable amount of our energy needs, while solar heating provides all of the resort’s hot water. The following installations are part of our infrastructure:

80 MW Solar photovoltaic panels
Solar Water heaters
Timed and semi-automatic timer controls (A/C and hot tubs)
4 villas are completely autonomous and off-the grid (100% solar energy, and solar water heating)

Waste Management

Desalination plant filtration system producing high quality drinking water, bottled in house, in glass bottles.
This has allowed us to eliminate the use of plastic bottles.
In addition, we have also eliminated almost all plastic packaging and single-use plastics.
Emphasis to favour of biodegradable materials throughout the hotel.
Organic waste diversion program in place

Support & encouragement to use local-owned business & culture; taxis, diving, bars, restaurants.
Creation of a carpentry workshop, creating upskilling in qualified jobs.

Emphasis on sustainable employment, future prospects & education.
Participation and organization of in beach cleanings.

Tropical & Vegetable Gardens

The resort has a garden nestled under shade providing palm trees. When visiting you can see firsthand how we grow vegetables and fruit on this sun-drenched sand-and-coral island.
Organic herb, vegetable garden & fruit trees picked daily by chefs to serve the restaurant.
With over 20.000 plants in our care, the lush gardens of the resort are without a doubt one of our most precious gem.

Local partners

We partner with local producers to bring the best of Zanzibar to your room.

Soaps and amenities are handcrafted locally by the team at Mwani Zanzibar, supporting the work of the community and the local know-how. Seaweed is picked daily on the beach, dried and processed in Paje.
We source food locally in our organic garden and with neighboring farmers and producers in Zanzibar.
Fresh fish is delivered on the beach by fishermen directly to our Chef.

Focus on partnering with sustainable suppliers for resort purchasing and products.
Suppliers are encouraged to reduce unnecessary packaging.
